People today are watching each other more than ever. No, really—they are literally watching each other’s every move on social media, live stream, phones , tvs, etc.. In the Training and Development world, this means most learning today is done online with the click of a button and by watching another person. Sometimes the people we’re watching don’t even have any credentials in what they are talking about, but we watch anyway. Rather than sticking with traditional PowerPoints and training methods, we need to adapt to accommodate the new learning market. How you ask? Great question! I have an answer: E-Learning. Your employees have required training to complete this quarter, yet they have “very little time to devote to learning while they try to carry out their daily business activities” (Adaptive Learning). Getting those quarterly training modules completed on time is not going to be on the top of their to-do list. And if it’s not on the top of their list, they are not going to get all they can from the material that you need them to. Is E-Learning starting to sound better, yet? It’s simple really. Let’s make learning as accessible and easy as checking an email. Let your employees control when and where they want to learn.
I know some of you must be thinking, “wait, what about my job security?!”. Don’t worry. E-learning is essentially a “support rather than primary tool” (Weinstein, 2018). E-Learning is an accessory to the training we have already created and designed, but now, it is accessed in a way that encourages employees to quickly and efficiently digest the information. As Training and Development professionals, we need to focus on how to embrace technology and utilize it to our company’s advantage. Weinstein (2018) also shares that “our brains are attuned to learn at the moment it is most necessary” so coupling our training with the internet can benefit us! Even as trainers, we can learn something new!
